History of an old restaurant around Mumbai

Discovering the magic of Sardar Pav Bhaji

Pav Bhaji is the perfect fusion of Indian spices and Western bread, a dish that breaks barriers and unites cultures.” 57 years and counting…Sardar Pav Bhaji is located in the former mill hub of South Mumbai, Tardeo. If you're in Mumbai and crave for pav bhaji, 8 out of 10 people would recommend you to head straight to Sardar Pav Bhaji because it isn’t just the flavour but it’s history that makes the eatery so iconic to Mumbai.

The journey of this restaurant began in 1966, when its founder Sardar Ahmed started selling snacks in Tardeo to mill workers who returned from their tiring shifts. Sardar Ahmed wanted to serve something that was more like a meal but was available at the price of a snack dish. He experimented with a dish that consisted of potatoes, onions, tomatoes and other seasonal vegetables mashed and cooked together, served with plenty of butter. He sold a plate of pav bhaji to the mill workers at 60 paisa each and today the same dish is being sold at 140 rupees and it still has had no impact on the restaurant's footfall and is almost always full. After Sardar Ahmed his successors continue to run this eatery. Even today the Pav bhaji at the restaurant uses their secret masala to make it yummy! They do not add in artificial food colour or other additives, which is why their pav bhaji is not red coloured…but a natural brown colour. Amul butter is a crucial ingredient in their dish and I have to agree. If there is one restaurant that swears by its loyalty to the delicious butter, it is Sardar Pav Bhaji.

The menu here is unlike any other, the only options here are a variety of pav bhaji with some soft drinks, delicious buttery masala pav and caramel custard along with Chocolate Mousse for dessert. So get ready to take your taste buds on a rollercoaster ride with Sardar Pav bhaji, a symphony of flavours that will leave you craving for more!
